Catherine Wilson

My background is in Art and Design and my affinity with textiles has always been evident in my practice, wither it be painting, drawing, designing or printing.

My inspiration comes from the fabric itself: I love old, well-worn linen, cotton, silk and lace.  The patterns, textures and quality of workmanship in these materials reflect a time when textiles were expensive, precious items.  The general wear, intrinsic to each piece, speak of their individual histories and create narratives which inform my work.

My collection of fabrics comes from many sources, some are inherited, many are from antique fairs and others are from my travels abroad.  Tatty pieces of threadbare, patched and frayed household materials create the basis of my work.

My work aims to preserve, as in an archive, rather than to discard and questions present day attitudes to our throwaway culture.

As a member of Textilia 3, I enjoy working alongside other textile artists, exploring new and varied techniques and processes during our frequent workshops.
