Hand-stitched self portrait on vintage linen handkerchief

I come from a family of makers and doers but followed the path of science for many years.  My formal art training happened much later when I embarked on an HNC in textile design at Bradford College in 2008.

I like working with translucent materials such as cotton or silk organdie, but I also create my own fabrics through the chemical burnout process of devore.  It is important for my work to tell a story and I use mainly hand embroidery to enhance and embellish.

I am drawn to the work of graphic designers such as Angie Lewin and Lucienne Day, admiring their ability to distil complex organic forms into simple, linear marks.

The support of Textilia members has offered much-needed feedback and encouragement as I have learned to find my voice.  New themes and exhibitions continue to challenge me to develop my work.
